Rip-off tip-offs

We have experienced number of distraught customers who show up with a huge estimate in hand asking for a second opinion, only to find that a simple cheap repair is all that is really needed.
It is not coincidence that these estimates are mostly from the big chain stores and certain car dealers where the mechanics are paid on commission.
The more they sell, the more they earn in take-home pay.
Paying mechanics on commission should be illegal.
Repairing cars is difficult, dirty exhausting work. Honest repair shops with skilled technicians deserve your business--but shady operators can cost you a bundle.

Be suspicious of any garage that

  • Uses scare tactics
  • Operates on cash-only basis
  • Asks you to sign a blank work order
  • Won't give a written estimate
  • Refuses to show or return old parts
  • Won't go on test-drive with you
  • Talks down to you
  • Won't have or take the time to explain a repair
  • Employs mechanics paid on commission
  • Too good to be true "specials"
  • Beware of chain store robber barons and gunfighter dealership service managers
